Mulch types and uses

We supply and spread two mulch types suited to Sydney conditions:

Hardwood chip mulch is a long-lasting, coarse mulch suited to established garden beds with larger shrubs and trees. It breaks down slowly over 2-3 years, adds organic matter to the soil, and suppresses weeds effectively. A 75 mm deep layer is the standard application for established beds.

Sugar cane mulch is a finer, faster-decomposing mulch that works well around vegetables, annuals, and younger plantings. It breaks down in 6-12 months and improves soil structure more quickly than hardwood. Better for vegetable gardens and beds you turn regularly.

How much mulch do you need?

A standard garden bed 4 m long by 1 m wide, mulched to 75 mm depth, uses 0.3 cubic metres of mulch. For a full garden refresh on a typical suburban property with several beds, 1-3 cubic metres is common. Our garden measurement tool can help you estimate bed area before you book.

Quick mulch estimator

Small yard

2-4 beds, ~20 sqm total. Typically 0.5-1 m³ of mulch. Labour ~1 hour.

Medium yard

4-8 beds, ~40-60 sqm total. Typically 1.5-3 m³. Labour 2-3 hours.

Large yard

Multiple large beds, 60+ sqm. 3-6 m³+. Labour half to full day.

Access note: for large mulch orders (3+ cubic metres), we need vehicle access to within a reasonable distance of the beds. If access is restricted, mulch can be wheelbarrowed but this adds to the labour component. Mention access restrictions at booking.

Common questions

How deep should mulch be applied in Sydney?

For established garden beds, 75 mm (7.5 cm) is the standard depth. This is deep enough to suppress most weeds and retain moisture effectively without smothering plant roots. For new plantings or vegetable gardens, 50 mm is usually sufficient. Keep mulch pulled back 5-10 cm from plant stems to avoid collar rot.

What is the difference between hardwood and sugar cane mulch?

Hardwood chip mulch lasts 2-3 years, is better for established shrubs and trees, and gives a neat tidy appearance. Sugar cane mulch breaks down in 6-12 months, improves soil faster, and is better around vegetables and annuals. Most Sydney gardens use hardwood for permanent beds and sugar cane for vegetable patches.

How much mulch does a standard Sydney garden need?

For a typical suburban property with several established garden beds, 1-3 cubic metres is common. A small courtyard garden might need 0.5-1 m³. A large property with extensive beds can need 5+ m³. Use our garden measurement tool to trace your beds and get an estimate before booking.

How often should mulch be topped up?

Hardwood chip mulch in a Sydney garden typically needs topping up every 2-3 years as it breaks down. Sugar cane mulch needs refreshing annually. A good indicator is when you can see soil through the mulch layer or the depth has dropped below 30-40 mm.
