Fresh mulch is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for a Sydney garden. A 75 mm layer of hardwood chip mulch suppresses most annual weeds, retains soil moisture through summer, and slowly improves soil structure as it breaks down. For a typical suburban property with several established beds, a full mulch refresh costs $300-$600 all in.
We supply and spread two mulch types. Hardwood chip mulch ($120-$160 per m³ supplied and spread) is long-lasting, suited to established shrubs and trees, and breaks down over 2-3 years. Sugar cane mulch ($80-$120 per m³) decomposes faster, improving soil more quickly, and works better around vegetables and younger plantings.

75 mm (7.5 cm) is the standard depth for established garden beds. This is deep enough to suppress most weeds and retain moisture without smothering plant roots. Keep mulch pulled back 5-10 cm from plant stems to avoid collar rot.
Hardwood chip mulch typically needs topping up every 2-3 years as it breaks down. Sugar cane mulch needs refreshing annually. Top up when you can see soil through the mulch or the depth has dropped below 30-40 mm.
